Sunday 3rd
October.
We have spent
the last couple of days sailing the 180 miles or so from New
York State to the Chesapeake Bay, as we are taking Discovery Magic to her debut at the
Annapolis Boat Show.
Setting off at
3am on the first morning we had good wind and then the awe of the soft glimmer
of pre-dawn, growing and glowing to sun-burst – I always feel it’s
a privilege to see that moment. Since then we have had strong winds, rain
and lumpy, grey seas.
The landscape
the amount of traffic and the weather are very different from our glorious
summer in Maine,
but for all that there is always something to amuse and interest. We
travelled along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (which shortens our journey to Annapolis by some 120
miles), with its assortment of bridges and large cargo vessels alongside us. The
nicest travelling companion was a little bird who, with much fluttering, came
and clung on to my fleece jacket for a while, before taking a rest on the stern
of the boat.
Now it’s
going to be ‘clean and polish’ all the way to the Show.
