Terceira
June 21/11  With a 6:15 a.m. start «whose idea was that?» and varying winds, we left the island of Sao Jorge,  motoring and/or sailing.
The views of the villages and fields with their fences of small lava rocks along the coast were good. The cliffs looked steeper, and we saw the village that is only accessible by boat or donkey track.
The 2 dolphins that came along were of a different kind than we'd seen before, but no whales were sighted despite this area being the home of the sperm whale, and many others pass through.
Stuart's osso bucco was delicious, especially welcome on a very cool day being the start of summer. In Terceira, we anchored near the fort walls and enjoyed the rest of the longest day of the year.
Bulls on ropes gave some adrenalin rushes in Sao Mateus, especially to those who thought the bull would clear the wall they were standing on. Lava rock can cause road rash when it falls against your leg.
Standing near a portable bar keeps dehydration away.
Friendly strangers with more beer came to our rescue when the 9 pm taxi back to Angra do Heroismo didn't show. The next day, the 6 free running bulls in the streets of Angra do Heroismo caught some off guard. Only 1 man was tossed, and another chased up a street lamp pole by another bull.
Morning coffee can be had with or without brandy, Sagres beer is the daily transfusion of life, in 20 cl - 1L glasses.
Be warned of the white wine sangria! The red was not much better. Blood sausage is better here than in Guadeloupe. Only the intrepid tried the pigs’ ears in garlic and coriander with lots of bread to soak up the broth. With the weather forecast of wet and windy, we are headed out to Lisbon, after much cultural immersion in Terceira.
