Yesterday we made more miles under sail than we had really expected. The wind was variable in strength, mainly from the SW and so we sailed at 2 to 6 knots or motored as necessary to continue to make progress. The sea has been very kind to us with very little wave and no swell and so everyone is feeling well. Everything gong ever so well until:-

I was on watch from 1800 to 2100 when the wind started to back considerably and although there was enough to sail we were being pushed too far north for my liking and well away from the point our weather guru said we should head for. On with the engine to make a better course in which case the genoa, the big foresail, needed to be rolled away. (It rolls around the forestay or should). It rolled a few turns and then jambed, it would roll out but not in. As they say ''that's never happened before''. So all hands on deck and we proceeded to drop the sail on deck, it's dark by now of course, but without too much difficulty we got it down and lashed to the side rail. We have therefore motored all night and now that it is light, 0600, we will try to investigate the problem.

While I've been on watch, 0300 to 0600 we have entered the gulf stream properly and so have a heading that counteracts to north going stream to leave us heading due east. Once we exit the stream we will had for a point where there is a favourable counter current, according to our guru.
