Had motor trip in sunshine along north coast of
Sicily (San Vito to Cefalu) on Mayday. Cefalu is a very attractive
town set at the foot of an impressive rock backdrop. Peter and Vicky
helped us moor up in last spot in harbour.
Following morning set off for Aeolian
islands. Long day motoring was rewarded with idyllic conditions as we
reach Stromboli at dusk watching it puff smoke in the air as we
approached. By the time we reached the 'viewing spot' from the
north coast of the volcano it was dark and almost a flat calm. We
switched off the engine and had supper watching the volcanic eruptions which
were simply amazing. Three spouts were active and glowing but the best bit
was when they blew fireworks into the night every twenty minutes or so
accompanied by loud bangs. With such calm conditions we were then able to
anchor on the east side of the island off one of its two villages for the rest
of the night.
The next morning we dropped south to Lipari
where Lawrence departed by catching a ferry back to Sicily. Lipari is a
pretty village and has good shops. We provisioned this morning (4 May) at
the best supermarket we have found since leaving Majorca.
Now having a pleasant gentle sail towards the
Straits of Messina where we hope to be looked on kindly by Scilla and
Charybdis.
