Our expectations were high when we arrived at Hole in the Wall, as it was known as a favourite anchorage for cruisers. We anchored just at the entrance to the enclosed harbour with a maze of waterways through extensive mangrove swamps – we did this for two reasons - to escape the mosquitoes and to avoid the numerous tourist boats that endlessly whizz past during daylight hours. Not the most picturesque anchorage, but there was a breeze and no mosquitoes. We got in the dinghy and explored some of the muddy mangroves and old abandoned yachts and arrived at the local strip of fish restaurants on stilts for lunch. The ramshackle restaurants have a number of pens (fish farms) where you select the fish and they cook it for you. Unfortunately we didn’t go to the toilet until after lunch and realised the sewerage when straight in the water (with our fish!). So I am really surprised that we didn’t get sick and to make matters worse I thought I would combat the deep fried fish by having a fresh carrot juice and I got a warm carrot milkshake instead!
