We arrived with light winds in sunny Madeira on 12 October after a 450 mile uneventful trip from Lagos, Portugal where Moonshadow Star had stayed ashore during July, August and September and an overnight stop in Porto Santo (a small island 25 miles north of Madeira).

After completing the regular jobs required to 'put the boat to bed' we hired a car to spend a few days looking round the island. Truly an island of contrasts; barren areas, very green areas, thick cloud, no cloud (bright sun). The roads away from the express ways, which were relatively straight and tunnelled through the rock, were very steep and twisty remarkably similar to our recent car journey through the Swiss alps.

All too soon it was time to fly back to Britain to catch up on our 'other life' and have 'Christmas' with our family before returning to Madeira to commence our Atlantic crossing to Barbados
