56:10.96N 05:31.87W Friday - bad weather on the way so we decided to make a dash back to the mainland.   We’re currently in an area influenced by an amphidrome – a point in the sea where the tidal amplitude is zero due to tidal waves cancelling each out.  It’s strange not to have any noticeable rise and fall of tide, and it makes passage planning much easier.  Leaving Islay we proceeded up the Sound of Jura – unfortunately it was misty but you still get a sense of grandeur, and of course it’s a novelty for us to have land on both sides.  We’re double-reefed in the morning in anticipation of increasing wind but it doesn’t materialise, though the sea is quite lumpy and throws the stern around.  By the afternoon we’ve tried every sail combination, including the cruising chute, but the wind has gone completely.  The mist clears by way of compensation and the scenery is spectacular, my neck has become a corkscrew making sure I don’t miss anything.  Photos: Juniper courtesy of Skerryvore, and first outing for the cruising chute.
