54:59.72N 01:27.19W Friday – Blue sky and warm breeze, we’d like to have left straight after breakfast but had to wait for the tide to rise over the sand bar at the harbour entrance.  It’s a good chance to air the boat and dry the piles of damp clothing we’ve accumulated.  We have a shallower draft than the other boats waiting to leave so we feel like guinea pigs as we inch our way out, but it’s fine and we’re soon out round Coquet island and onwards to the River Tyne.  The landmarks become familiar to Gordon as we near Tynemouth but it’s interesting to see them from the sea.  The river is bigger than I expected and the entrance very imposing, with the statue of Admiral Lord Collingwood keeping watch.   Once again we’re made to feel tiny as the huge DFDS ferry makes its way out to sea, and the tide is on the ebb so we’re not exactly bowling along.  Safely past, we’re able to pass straight into the marina lock though we lose a fender on the way.  I’ve never fished but did manage to hook it back out of the water as it swept by.  We’ve been placed next to Wispy Lace, the boat we were rafted with in Eyemouth, and one of the others leaving Amble behind us, so it all seems very familiar.  Time for a quick shower then off to meet Susan and Jimmy, Gordon’s sister and brother in law, for a meal and catch up – another good day.  Photos: Giant on the move and entertaining Juniper style.
