Thursday – the forecast isn’t good but the lock gate doesn’t open until the afternoon so we can postpone a decision.  We shop and have Arbroath smokies for lunch – I’m not a smoked fish fan and am underwhelmed.  At 2pm the skipper makes his decision, influenced no doubt by the dual sounds of the foghorn and the downpour on the sprayhood.  Instead of sailing we walk to the Signal Tower, built to send and receive messages from the Bell Rock lighthouse 11 miles away.  In the 14th century a local abbot became so concerned at the loss of life caused by the rock that he arranged for a bell to be installed, hence its name Bell rock.  The tower is now a museum explaining the history of the lighthouse, which was built by Robert Stevenson 200 years ago this year and was inspired by Smeaton’s lighthouse, which we saw in Plymouth.  If we decide to sail directly to Eyemouth from here we will sail within sight of the lighthouse so it’s all very interesting.  Then back to the boat; I want a shower but the facilities are round the other side of the harbour – still, I’m so wet I might as well walk round there before I take my coat off.
