Break Day

Not the right kind of “break”, unfortunately.   Today — with by far the lightest air we’ve had so far — we've…
  • Blown out our light air spinnaker
  • Had to replace a sheave in the snuffer for our heavier spinnaker
  • Lost a sun hat overboard
  • Broken a pin in our handy billy block & tackle
  • Lost satellite data connectivity and needed shoreside support to restore it
  • Cleaned up in the wake of the “peanut butter incident”
And of course, have traveled slowly.

Regarding the spinnaker, we raised it about noon with just enough air to fly it, and watched it blow out an hour later in the only gust of wind all day that has exceeded 11 knots.  Sigh.  At least it wasn’t new (it dated from DZ’s racing days back in France, two owners ago).  And Rocky likes his new bow tie:

PS. I held off uploading this post until sunset, figuring odds were good that we’d have something else to add to the “broken” list before end of day.  And as it happened, a squall started moving in behind us while we were eating dinner.  At least for the moment, however, only good news to report: We’re back to a respectable 5.8 knots and a heading that's straight for St. Lucia!
