Well, it's been a good day in the mid Atlantic. Progress
continues at a pace and we averaged over 7 knots through the night in a lumpy
sea under 2 reefs and a full genoa. Our 24 hr run distance to midday today has
been 167nm which is more than double the distance over the last 2
days.
Our watches on board are divided into 3hr sessions
through the night (18.00- 06.00) and then 4 hour watches during the day. This
system has been working well as every 24hrs you move forward one watch and so no
one has 2 days following with the same watches to do. We are now into the odd
situation that our first 4 hour watch from 06.00-10.00 is done mainly in the
dark. Sun rise today was after 09.00 ships time, which is still UTC, and sunset
is well after 20.00hrs. Things are about to change though. We have agreed that
when we reach the 45 degree meridian we will "put the clocks back", not a measly
one hour, but three hours, to bring sunrise and sunset into a more
sensible time frame. (For those with good memories form their school days, 1
degree longitude is 4 minutes, 4x45=180 minutes=3hrs). Three hours fits in with
the watch system and it will make not the slightest difference to us on board as
we tend to eat around daylight hours anyway. We'll "loose" the remaining
hour needed to bring us into Caribbean time when we arrive. As you can see from
our position we are nearly at 45 degrees West, so, TONIGHTS THE NIGHT! I suspect
the skipper and crew will be confused (more confused?) for several days
hence.
Tonights fare was a "strange" blend - Garlic
prawns and Tuna Empanadas to start followed by Chickpea Ratatouille with
Tuna Canelloni cooked by Heston Jackson.
We saw a ship today - great excitement, the MV Apollon,
but no sign of any yachts, no dolphins or whales just the common flying fishes
keeping us company.
More soon, techno willing.
