We  have just spent a fantastic day eating and drinking our way around Kangaroo Island, devouring the KI hospitality.  Kalen, our American driver (who came to KI with his Aussie wife 18 years ago and didn’t leave) picked us up 8.30 and we all headed off to our first stop – Island Beehive to sample the different varieties of honey.  In 1884 Ligurian bees from Italy were sent to KI and are now unique to this island as gentle and productive.  The mated queens are exported interstate and to the US for $300 each and are completely disease-free.  It was hard not to buy toooo much beautiful honey.

Our next stop was the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery for some cider sampling.  They also have magnificent emu and eucalyptus oil products and creams.  We all smelt very nice after sampling these products.

Next was the Island Pure Sheep Dairy where all dairy products come from sheep instead of cows.  We sampled the many varieties of feta, haloumi, honey yoghurt and creamed cheeses – delicious. (where are we going to put all the produce/wine/souvenirs??).  Then up the road to K.I.S (Kangaroo Island Spirits).  We sampled 3 gins, 2 vodkas and 5 liquors including sweet, chilli & thai flavoured (all before lunch)!.

There are 600,000 sheep on the island and 38,000 koalas – and did we see one koala????   NOOOOO!!
But we did have an absolutely brilliant day, although a day on KI does not do it justice – 1-2 weeks would about do it.
Cheers!!!!
