After a relaxing day spent in Salcombe we made plans
for a short sail towards Dartmouth. The dinghy deflated, John took the
helm and motored out of Salcombe. The pilot plans made the day before was
reversed and after lining up the leading marks from the stern we made our
way back over Salcombe's sand bar. With the wind from the SW we unfurled the
head sail and headed towards Prawle point. The wind steadily increased so a reef
was put in the main. With wind and tide together Start points overfalls
would not be a problem and rounding Start point and its light house we decided
to anchor off Hallsands.
The lower Village of Hallsands was washed away during
a storm when the shingle from the bank of the Skerrries was removed to help
build Devonport Docks. After a sail across Start bay we entered Dartmouth
and dropped the anchor just off the town so everyone could go ashore and
explore.
With provisions brought back on for the nights super we
lifted the anchor and headed up river passing the famous royal navel
college and the higher chain ferry. The plan was to pick up a mooring buoy
for the night. As the village of Dittisham came into view we passed under the
famous author Agatha Christie's house.
