We have travelled south along the west side of Yasawa Island and anchored in Malakati Bay on Naviti Island. The bay is well protected by fringing reefs, so we get some respite from the northerly swells that seem to dog these anchorages. There is a village on shore and we did the sevusevu process to ask permission to anchor off their beach. The tradition is that you present the chief (a bit fat guy lolling in his bed mid afternoon!) with $F15 worth of kava - like a koha. No lights visible in the village, so no power or gen set. But we did see a satellite dish! Everyone is very friendly but their English is quite limited. Some of the older men had worked in NZ for a time in the 70s. The school bus (a long boat) took the kids off to the next village to school. They were all kitted out in blue skirts or shorts and white shirts! All well on board, with Pia's breadmaking skills coming on in leaps and bounds.
