Thursday 9th August: All change on Gaudeo at Rianxo
(Ria de Arousa) with arrival from London of the Newington-Bridges for their
"relaxing" weekend. Head for the beach, engine stops - cause, Arthur,
aged almost two, who had found the red and blue buttons on the control
panel; a narrow miss of irreversible damage to the precious
alternator had an adjacent but less inviting button been pressed.
Grandchildren could have a role in helping designers determine flaws
in new yachts.
Caught supper (mackerel) en route, then
endless beach mermaids, sandcastle building, sand burials, and
bathing for the next 2 days in perfect weather and on beautiful beaches.
This and haut cuisine at anchor are ideal antidotes for insomnia
- the children even had to be woken in the morning.
Saturday 11th August: Fiesta for mussel
fishing in the small town on Ile de Arousa - there are over 3,000 mussel fishing
rafts (viveros) in the Ria. The shore front was given over to al fresco
kitchens (and trestle tables) serving paella, empanada, barbecued fish, and
numerous mussel preparations with Galician wines. Then more sand castles
etc. before returning to Rianxo for the N-Bs last night. No room in the harbour
meant another night on anchor followed by a dawn raid onto the beach and
force march to nearby town for their taxi to Santiago airport. They
claim that travel for their long W/E was not much
more difficult than trips up to Shropshire!
The rest of the day was rather quiet aboard
Gaudeo. The last few days took us back 30 years when we had 3 small
children on a much smaller boat and usually in the
rain!
