This is more like the champagne sailing I promised Columba! The sea has calmed down and the sun is shining, the current is back in our direction and we now have less that 250 miles to go, and it looks like we will arrive around dawn on Monday.
When I went to the cockpit yesterday morning, there was a dead flying fish on the cockpit grating. For a fleeting moment, I thought about putting in on Columba's blanket, eyes facing hers, for when she woke up. But then I thought of the pain and misery that would bring me in the days ahead when the prank was over, and so I threw him back into the sea.
Over these last few days, we have begun to see a build up of sargasso seaweed and this is similar to the experience I had eight years ago when on leaving the Canary Islands I noticed the odd bit of seaweed floating about but on approaching the Caribbean, there were great swathes of the stuff everywhere. It's dense enough to cause problems with speed impellers and water intakes.
Barbados is 133 miles away and it should be abeam of us tomorrow at ten ish.
