Nightsong

Dear Blog

Noon position (GMT -2) 34.60N 53.10W

Done the magnificent distance of 74 miles since noon yesterday - 3 knots average - after our record run the day before of 187 miles, the shortest ever daily run in Nightsong. So that's another 18 days for the 2/3 distance (1200 miles) we still have to sail !! - no seriously think the boys can still catch the plane on 2nd June. No wind most of yesterday and although we had 8 knots for the night . it was a dead noser so Nightsong was only going 4.5 knots and VMG wasn't good.

Compensations tho' - plenty of dolphins (common and spotted) and Portuguese men 'o' war sailing by - plus birds galore. After the disappointing passages over the Atlantic and up from Tortola, the birds are a treat. Cory's shearwaters plus Greater shearwaters, Sooty shearwaters, storm petrels and white tailed tropic birds ( a bit like the long tailed terns of Bermuda). Simon thought he had caught a fish as we drifted at one point but it turned out to be a Cory's shearwater - we cut it free and it seemed all right if rather cross!

Simon is better as the photo attached shows - still not taking alcohol but he promises to make up for that in Horta!!

Must say it is good HAVING to sail so spirits good. I have enough sailcloth to do 2 more repairs to the jib (4 hours work yesterday) but hopefully it will last until the Azores at least
