Dear blog

Well we have finally done 180 miles in a day - not quite my long term ambition of 200 miles in a day. Still an average of 7.5 knots for 24 hours ain't bad (for landlubbers this is about 9 mph or for the really modern kiwis 15km/hr!). What is more we only have 250 miles to go as I write this - if we can keep this up by noon tomorrow we should have done 525 miles in 3 days on this gybe and only have 80 miles to go. So we should arrive Wednesday evening - unfortunately in the dark - unless the wind drops.

To celebrate we have
  • Changed our on-board time to St Lucia time  ie back 4 hours. It was getting ridiculous getting light at 10am and dark about 2130
  • Got out the St Lucia courtesy ensign
  • Spotted another boat - the first for 3 days (I really think we should see more boats from now on in as we all converge)
The weather is now glorious - 20 knots of wind, 30degC air temp, 28C water temp. Caribbean sailing weather in fact. All we need is a few rum punches and a bevvy of pretty women! 4 men on a boat for 3 weeks is pretty sad!

The seas have got bigger despite the moderate wind - for the first time really looking like an ocean (see below)

Actually they never seem big in a photo but I guess they are 4m high.

Squalls last night but small ones compared to the biguns of 2 days ago. These we had tracked for 15 miles (1 hr) before they hit us. Last night's popped up a mile or two away and we managed to sail through them recording 28 knot winds not the +40 knot winds of 2 days ago.

Anyway all well - the sails and boat holding together  - just - and spirits high! And I have booked the sailmaker in St Lucia!
