In country training proceeds apace and
seems very relevant. Today, Hamish met with his programme advisor
(Aissatou) and now has a slightly clearer picture of the task ahead. In
addition to general clinical work, for the next three months his principal task
is to identify the facilities/service provided by L'Hopital de Zidim for
HIV/AIDS patients and prepare a report to assist the preparation of a
development plan. Anne meets with her programme advisor (Ibrahim) on
Friday, but from some of the presentations we've had, a clearer picture of her
task is emerging. We have both found the presentations by the VSO Cameroon
Director, Danny Pelletier, quite inspiring. He is a man with a clear
vision of the objective for VSO in Cameroon and a real enthusiasm for
development work balanced with a sense of realism. For us, the next
challenge is the journey to Maroua. We leave by train on Friday evening,
travelling overnight. Then we will have a 6-8 hour bus journey (if all
goes to plan!). We willl have a furhter week's training in Maroua before
moving to Zidim.
Today, we took some time out to visit the
Marche Central - reminds us a bit of the famous "Barrows" in Glasgow, but more
atmospheric.
