Engine update and more

Monday June 2, 2008. Still in Fort Pierce, Florida!

We were up and out early this morning to try and get our
engine analysis. First we went to Fort Pierce Diesel Service
where we met the owner, Jose, who was extremely helpful and
suggested we get the cylinder heads pressure checked and the
valves reseated. That took us to Bobby’s Machine where the
owner, Bobby, was also helpful and agreed, sort of, to get
the pressure checks etc done as quickly as he could. Then,
on his recommendation, we took the injectors to Action
Diesel Service where the owner checked the injectors
immediately, declared one faulty and said he could have it
ready by morning if he didn’t need to order a new nozzle. So
we achieved a lot, met a lot of helpful people and managed
to do all this in less than two hours. No place was more
than a mile or two from the next and as we criss-crossed
Fort Pierce we got to know our way around pretty quickly.

With all that in hand it was back to the boat to fix other
items. I soldered the connections to the stern light which I
had temporarily fixed while in the Keys, re-mounted the
winch handle pocket in the cockpit using screw instead of
Velcro. The Velcro held but the glue attaching the Velcro to
the winch pocket didn’t. Then I was even able to get to fix
some of the trim around the companionway that I had brought
with me and this allowed me to attach barrel bolts to the
center companionway board so it can be positively secured in
place. I still have to do the top one.

While I was doing this Janet worked on a hook to hang our
life vests and cleaned up below. This evening (while I had a
nap) she was scrubbing rust stains off the aft deck. Somehow
some metal filings have been coming out of somewhere and
then producing rust spots on the fiberglass. We think
dealing with this will be an ongoing project for a while.

So, although we have been busy we are still not sure when we
will be able to leave Fort Pierce. It’s been a good place to
stop and, so far, a good place to get things done. More on
this later.
