Having dogged the large traffic through the western approaches doing quite well I think to get as far as Lizard point but way off shore the wind finally arrived and we were off the wind direction was good for my choice of route which was the intermediate route. Yes I know I'm a wimp but I prefer the warm weather.

Having done about 50 miles or so and off the French peninsula my steering lines broke for the second time. This was a problem that we had on the way down from Weymouth. It was this stage I had to admit that the system would not carry me across the Atlantic and a return to Plymouth where the designers are based would be required to effect repairs.

On top of this a small tear in my main sail with only an old sail for replacement drew me to the conclusion that the correct procedure would to retire from this years Jester Challenge.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the preparation both of the boat and myself, the week In Plymouth prior to the race, the camaraderie and excellent organisation. I would not have missed it for the world. However, with a small window of opportunity to complete the challenge and return to the UK the right decision with great regret and a lot of sadness was to accept that for me the  challenge was over.

Jacinta and I have achieved and surmounted quite a few hurdles to get here all of which will be lessons learned for the second running of the challenge in 4 years time. Without a doubt I will be on the start line.

While on my return across the channel I was able to offer a lift to a hitch hiker. he said his name was Charlie and allowed me to hold him in my hands so as to warm him up. After a rest of about an hour he decided that it was time to complete his journey. (see picture)

For those who have enjoyed following my progress I will be updating the page with Jacinta's and mine adventures and tours of the south coast through out this year. Please log on and enjoy.
