imageAfter months of planning and dreaming, the day of departure is here. I recently picked ODA up from the shipyard where she has spent the winter getting the last electronics and other equipment installed, I have more or less completed the long “to-do” list of things to prepare for being away for a long time, and the crew for the first leg of the trip are assembled and ready for the North Sea. The first leg of my sailing trip from Norway to Belize. I plan to arrive in Belize by next Easter.

We are departing from Aker Brygge in Oslo, following the coastline South to Kristiansand, and then heading due West to Inverness, Scotland. The North Sea can be moody, but the weather reports are unusually favorable, so there is no time to waste in getting out there. We plan on spending four days sailing to Inverness. On board are childhood friend Vibeke, colleague Aase Karin and her son John, my friend Kai, my nephew Tobias (my permanent crew  for the next couple of years) and myself. Vibeke, Aase Karin and John will be leaving us already in Inverness.

Much can be said and written about these past months in preparing for this trip. It has definitely been a time of ups and downs and reflection about the reasons for embarking on such a journey. But mostly it has been an exciting dream that is now actually happening. I want to thank everyone that has helped me make it happen. You know who you are.

I hope you will follow our progress as we head out to sea and share the many exciting events ahead on board ODA.
