Another 0.75oz spinnaker went up in the morning and after half an hour fell to the same fate as it’s predecessor – these old spinnakers are fortunately here to save our better sails, and that’s what they are doing! Changed to the 1.5oz spinnaker for the rest of the day, fast running in 20-30 knots of wind. We are learning the hard way that the whole approach to sail wieght on a trans-Atlantic is the reverse of the usual racing strategy, which is to use th elightest possible and change up to a heavier weight as the wind increases. On the Atlantic you need to set the heaviest and only change to a lighter one if there is not enough wind pressure to hold the sail up. A celebratory glass of wine for passing half way was served with lunch today!
