We met a group of Americans all on 'Island (piglets) Packets'. Bob and
Bev on 'Foreclosure' invited us aboard one evening and we got on very
well. We met Nigel on 'Tirla', a wharram Cat who sailed across the
Atlantic with the Arc.
We then met a couple from the North Carolina who were about to make us
change our plans because we all got on so well together. Wilbur and
Morgan aboard 'On the Wings of the Wind', berthed next alongside us one
Saturday in January. We got chatting and as we were all heading for
Guadeloupe we decided to meet up in Deshaies. We left Antigua on
Tuesday 29th January. There was absolutely no wind and we had to motor
all the way. (40 miles). We arrived in Deshaies with over exposure to
the sun. Next day we cleared customs, a simple procedure. 'Wings'
arrived shortly after and anchored. Wilbur and Morgan have a fast rib
which has proved very popular taking us all to far flung beaches to
snorkel and explore. We arranged to meet the next day to hike up the
Deshaies river to the waterfall at the head. Well, Chris Doyle in his
pilot book suggests it is a two hour hike with a road near the top to
walk back down again. After nearly two hours hiking up massive rocks
and boulders along the river bed, we still had not come across the road.
Neither couples wanted to admit defeat so we
continued. We found the road and finally ascended to the waterfall.
It was this that cemented our friendship and we became travelling
companions.
