We are past the half way mark, with the coast of Africa some 1100 miles to our east, and our nearest Western landfall (Venezuela) 1300 miles away. Nothing in sight today and no radio contact with other vessels. We are on our own, in the middle of nowhere.

Wishing to dispel rumours amongst the crew that the end fresh vegetables on board could affect their mental health the chef has come out with the following statement:

“What I have heard is nonsense; we still have garlic, onion and chillies. With these, as well as this chicken and this flying fish, some beans and some rice pudding, I shall create a dish of such delicacy and dietary balance as to tantalise the most developed palate. I am sure I will get a Michelin star and kick that geek Jamie Oliver into touch”.
