We arrived in Puerto Calero marina in Lanzarote yesterday about midday. We had a good, but slow, sail down from Madeira.

It was Stuart's birthday on Wednesday. It was amazing with 'pressies' and cards; how the postman found us in the middle of the ocean I do not know! As ever, Liz made the day special. She made scones, shortbreads, and birthday cake. We had a full-blown afternoon tea, complete with the cake stand, sandwiches, earl grey tea, and all the trimmings, including a wee dram of Balvenie whisky (a present from Liz).

We sighted land at the north end of the island in the early evening. And, then, just before sunset the dolphins arrived. A massive pod. Guessing, but possibly 100 individuals, and they swam with us for at least an hour. A perfect end to the day. (We managed to take lots of movie footage of the dolphins, but no still photos - the photo here is a frame from the movie - the movie itself is much better than the still frame suggests. And the movie includes sound - it is surprising how noisy dolphins are when they communicate with each other.)

So far we haven't explored here but from what we can see Lanzarote is pretty much an offshore extension of the Sahara, pretty desert-like and quite barren. We assume the main appeal of the place is its climate, but unbelievably yesterday we had cold and wet. Not what we travelled 3000 miles for! Better today though and as we explore maybe we will find the hidden appeal to Lanzarote.
