Pete and Becky explore Reggio Calabria Italy.

14th - 15th July 2011

The straits of Messina were very windy, so we decided to stay in Reggio Calabria for  a couple of nights and hoped it died down a bit.

We were moored bows too at the end of the harbour wall with a lazy line which made it nice and easy for leaving. The only problem was the waves coming straight down the strait and entering the port which made it very rocky and rolley.

We spent the afternoon recovering from the 3 day passage and we then headed into town at about 5 o clock.

We could see some kite and windsurfers not far from the port area so we headed over to watch them.  With the wind being so constant blowing from the north down the strait it made it a perfect venue for boarders and kiters.  We sat in a bar and watched their antics. Some of them were brilliant doing amazing jibing tricks and the kiters getting loads of air time.

We did a bit of site seeing as well.  This is a bronze statue of Vittoria Alata (Winged Victory).

We headed back to FT via a pizza restaurant and had a early night as we were both still shattered.

The next morning saw me in the Vodafone shop getting my “dongle” a new Italian sim card whilst Becky was doing some retail therapy. I also found a hardware shop where I could buy a few bits and bobs for FT.  I eventually got back to the boat but not before admiring this car.

Yes a Lamborghini with the body work all made of carbon fibre. Judy could I have one please??

I got back to the boat and found Becky already there.  We arranged to go to the supermarket at 4 pm but when we got there we found out it was closed until 6 pm. So we headed for a beach. The only one in our proximity was a private beach club. We blagged our way in and sat for a while with a beer each whilst people watching.

We returned to FT and stowed our supplies had a couple of G&Ts and watched the sun set over Sicily.

Wow!!!!!!

We had decided to head into the city later than usual and it was humming.  The streets were packed with families promenading. We joined them and watched the world go by.

We watched couples dancing and street performers doing their stuff before heading back to FT.  It was going to be another early start the following morning 6am, as we had got 44 miles to go to the Aeolian Islands.
