Straits of Messina were not as busy as expected.  We sailed through with two knots of tide with us to start and then against us.  Very confused waters at Charybdis - but not a problem.  Reggio Calabra was stopping point - not much to recommend it - motorways and trains.

18 hour trip (mostly motor) following day (Tues 5 May) across toe part of boot of Italy.  Had great view of snowy but smoking Mount Etna.   Midnight arrival at Cortone where amazingly the harbour man was still around to help us tie up.  Cortone is a beach resort but not very attractive.  Small oil rigs off beach and untidy streets.

Overnight trip to Greece on Wed night.  Wind increased to gusts of 25 knots so sailed quite a bit on beam reach.  Seas a bit lumpy.

Morning arrival at small island to west of Corfu - Orthonoi.  Basic Greek village and very charming.  Had a lovely run up for over an hour up through olive groves and over hills accompanied throughout by local, very friendly, dog!  Wonderful supper ashore - fresh Greek food enjoyed by all of us.
