Steve and Jane Jones, (old sailing friends,
except that Jane isn't fond of sailing) arrived on 27 August and we hired a
car the following day to go for lunch at a village in the mountains. We
also visted the site of the ancient town of Lato which was almost free of other
tourists unlike the following day at Knossos which was heaving with them!
Still, it was an interesting site although much of it reconstructed from the
imagination of the archaelogist eg the bull fresco and the dolphin fresco in the
ladies washroom.
A return to sea and to Ormos Spinalonga on 29
August. The night at anchor was without a breath of wind (a bit of a
contrast to last week!) A motor trip the following day to Dhia island,
north of Iraklion, was followed by a beat to windward to get to Ormos
Bali. There we had a great evening with greek food, music, dancing and
lots of raki.
On to Rethymno where we found lots of good
restaurants during the three days we spent there putting the boat right.
We sewed the foresail, cleaned and waxed the hull and hired a man on a crane to
do some repairs at the top of the mast. There was a delay in its arrival
due to a farmers blockade of the marina carpark as they had been banned from
holding their market there. Rethymno also had a Venetian fortress with a
mosque which had an impressive domed roof.
Jane left the boat in Rethymno and we motored in
gentle conditions around the spectacular mountainous Akrotiri penisular.
Next port, Hania, is a lovely Venetian harbour where we were welcomed with
fireworks!
