Pirates of the Caribbean 

Life has been easy on the Southern Star. As we pass the 9^th day of our transat, we are consistently clocking in at 220 to 230 miles per day. Yesterday, we had a surreal mid-ocean encounter with a tall ship that appeared to come straight out of “The Pirates of the Caribbean”. To assure it was not just a mid-Atlantic mirage, we documented the encounter with drone footage while we overtook the ship. As it turns out, the ship (the “Thor Heyerdahl”), was a 50 meter, three-mast schooner, from Germany that offers young people a “classroom under sail.” 

As we progress on our journey, we will continue to raise the bar on how we sail the boat in every possible way: complexity of maneuvers, speed, VMG (Velocity Made Good), night time kite hours, etc. This requires ever-improving skills for all crew members.  The only trade-off for pushing the boat is that we have limited time for fishing, which is a matter of contention with Luca - who would like to have his cake and eat it too: go fast and still catch fish.

Luca, Jesper and Beau are keeping up the work-out routine. Between the tan and the ripped muscles, it may be difficult to recognize them when we land in Martinique.

The mood is still quite upbeat despite the limited sleep and the forced cohabitation, with no signs of cracking and lots of goofy dancing on the deck every evening at sunset.

Pirati dei Caraibi

La vita scorre tranquilla qui su Southern Star. Siamo ora al nono giorno della transat e percorriamo costantemente 220 – 230 miglia al giorno. Ieri abbiamo avuto un incontro un po' surreale in mezzo all'oceano con una nave d’epoca che sembrava uscita direttamente da "I Pirati dei Caraibi". Per essere sicuri che non si trattasse di un miraggio nel mezzo dell'Atlantico, abbiamo documentato l'incontro con il drone mentre sorpassavamo la nave. Si trattava, a quanto pare, della Thor Heyerdahl, una goletta tedesca a tre alberi di 50 metri che offre lezioni di vela ai giovani.

Man mano che procediamo nel nostro viaggio, continuiamo ad alzare in ogni modo il nostro livello di navigazione: complessità delle manovre, velocità, VMG, utilizzo notturno del gennaker, ecc. Ciò richiede un costante miglioramento per tutti membri dell’equipaggio, e il prezzo da pagare è che abbiamo poco tempo per pescare. Questo è motivo di contesa con Luca, che vorrebbe avere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca: andare veloce e continuare a pescare.

Luca, Jesper e Beau continuano la routine ginnica. Tra l'abbronzatura e i muscoli, potrebbe essere difficile riconoscerli quando sbarcheremo in Martinica.

L'atmosfera è ancora piuttosto allegra nonostante il sonno limitato e la convivenza forzata, senza cenni di cedimento e balletti sgangherati sul deck al tramonto.
