It was an eventful night on Wednesday: after a hard gybe, a pin holding the mainsail luff to the mast track broke off and flew away. Nic went up the mast in the dark (again!) to assess the situation and help take down the mainsail. We then removed the two top battens,re-hoisted the mainsail and postponed repairs to after sunrise.

The following Thursday morning Nic and Vincenzo impressed everyone (and saved the day) by sculpting a new pin out of a piece of amorphous steel using an angle grinder - MacGyver style.

The rest of the day flowed nicely between sailing in relatively light wind and a catch (a Bonito) that helps us replenish our protein stock.

By the end of the day, we were finally able to start heading west towards our target, with the wind coming from the northeast at an angle like the one we will sail at when we hook onto the trade winds.

23 Novembre

Mercoledì è stata una notte movimentata: dopo una bruscastrambata, un perno che fissava l’inferitura della randa alla rotaia dell'albero si è rotto ed è volato via. Nic è salito sull'albero al buio (di nuovo!) per valutare la situazione e aiutarci ad ammainare la randa. Successivamente, la abbiamo armata nuovamente senza le due stecche superiori, rimandando le riparazioni al mattino successivo.

Giovedì mattina Nic e Vincenzo hanno salvato la situazione scolpendo un nuovo perno da un pezzo di acciaio amorfo usando una smerigliatrice angolare - stile MacGyver.

Il resto della giornata è trascorso piacevolmente tra la navigazione con vento relativamente leggero e la cattura di un tonnetto bonitoche ci aiuta a ripristinare le nostre scorte proteiche.

A fine giornata, siamo finalmente riusciti a iniziare a puntare verso ovest, con il vento proveniente da nord-est, un angolo simile a quello con cui navigheremo quando ci troveremo negli alisei.
