Day 7 - 8th June - One week out

05:15S 107:54W Good noon to noon of 160.5nm which is great considering the light winds overnight which seem to be a pattern. We completed the first week at sea at midday and covered 1104nm in a straight line from Santa Cruz at an average of 6.6 knots. That is quite a bit over our normal target so very pleased with the progress. Long may it continue. We have 1871nm to go now and should be halfway by the weekend. The winds seem to be steadily blowing from the ESE now between 10 and 15 knots. 15 is Ok but 10 is a little light from that direction as we are having to go downwind and it is a little slow. However the flip side is living onboard is comfortable and Doreen is enjoying it much more than the Atlantic - I promised she would :)) We dropped the Code 0 today just to check the wear on the halyard where it comes out of the mast and through the bullseye. It is all OK but it is one area that I do like two check regularly for wear. I don’t want to have to retrieve it from the Sea if it happens to chafe through. I have done that enough in the past on much bigger boats to know that prevention is better than cure. Our fresh food is still lasting well but without having a freezer onboard we are limited in how long we can keep meat for. We are cooking the last of the chicken today in the oven with a chilli sauce. Dinner is a good focal point of the day and I have never believed just because you are at sea the standards should drop!! It is funny how somethings annoy different people in different ways on boats - Doreen has been getting stressed about a creaking sound that was coming from the woodwork below somewhere and was keeping her awake. I heard it a couple of days ago and knew what it was so completely tuned it out of my hearing to the point that I did not notice it because it was unimportant. Yesterday evening Doreen was trying to get some sleep in the saloon before coming on watch and I noticed she had a leg on the table and then she would move it to a different place and then remove it etc. I went down to make a coffee and she was sat up going on about this creak that was keeping her awake. The source of the creak was the table rubbing on the mast support that it fits around so I tore up a strip of paper and put it in the gap - 10 seconds later No more creak…. She did not see the funny side because it could have been fixed two days ago but I did not even know it was a problem…. For me it is “hair”. Ladies hair must be different to Mens. It must grow much faster because they lose so much of it and it gets EVERYWHERE… It drives me crazy on the boat but it is never something I noticed at home.. Life onboard is good as we get closer to our halfway mark. Photos attached - some “bird” hitching a lift & some jobs must go on. Cheers Saphir |
