Aaah, Spring 8'10.20N 98'20.49E
Oh to be in February started with the Phang Nga Bay Regatta: 4 days of
not-so-serious racing – a sort of ‘point-to-point’ really
–and 5 evenings of total debauchery. The crew: Heyko & Rose from the massive
cat Bavaria, Frank from Oz, the intrepid Boo as racing skip and Valerie, a
dreadlocked blond refugee from a monohull ‘slave crew’ position. 6
people, 6 nationalities: Brit, Aussie, Bavarian, Singaporean, Well, we didn’t do too badly considering that we hadn’t
raced or even sailed together before. In fact, between Krabi and Phi Phi we
picked up a lurvely beam wind and took great pleasure in creaming a band of
monohulls, cos we could use the asymmetrical gennaker where they were stuck
with a choice of foresail, or spinny in the drink, ho ho. But the highlights
were the parties – danced our little socks off, on the last night until
dawn crept wearily in. Then it was a few days re-stock before off for a fortnight’s
jolly to the Similan and Surin Islands with Valerie, via Nai harn, Nai Yang, Ko
Prathong, then straight across to Ko Surin, then a night sail under gennaker
down to Similan. Great sailing, great snorkelling, great beaches, what a
nightmare! Via Ko Rachai Yai on the return leg, so 15 days of magic. Bit of single handed sailing then for a few days before – bit
proud of that, managed to get sails up and down, solo reefing in 30 knots, very
lucky – before the trip back to Blighty for Spring in sunny Executive Resourcing Summerhill, Fletching Lane Newick, 31
