Welcome to Touch of Grey’s web diary.

We’ll be using this diary to record our progress and bring you reports of our Atlantic Ocean passage from Santa Cruz, Tenerife to Bridgetown, Barbados. The distance is 2550 nautical miles (2940 land miles) and we expect to take between 18 and 20 days. The starting gun for the event, the Atlantic Odyssey, is at noon on Saturday 19th November so we should be in the Caribbean by 9th December.

For the crossing we are being joined by our long time friend Ted Toth who is flying in from Austin, Texas a week before the Odyssey sets off, time enough we hope for him to find his sea legs.

Our plan is to provide ad hoc updates over the next few weeks as we complete our final preparations and to provide daily updates once under way.

Mailasail’s blogging facility is fairly basic but we are using it for two good reasons. The first is its Position Map feature and the ease with which we can record our position on it. The second is that posting to the blog is done by email and, once we are out of sight of land, our only means of written communication with the outside world will be satellite-phone based email - no browsing the internet, no logging on to blogging sites, no social media, zip.

Looking forward to keeping you updated.
