We got the sails up just before dinner last night. The wind had picked up nicely and it was off the beam of the boat (basically hitting us at right angles to the boat. This is one of the best sailing positions and we were soon hitting double figures - my phone clocking a max of 11.7 knotts. Ha dwe kept up that speed for the rest of the journey we would have arrived in Gran Canaria at lunch time today, but as with all good things it came to an end.

I knocked off my evening shift at 10pm and tried to get some rest below deck. WIth the boat leaning quite a lot to the left, and the bow where my cabin is, thrashing up and down it was a bit like trying to sleep in a tumble dryer (not leat of all because it is hot and humid at night). We left Andy and Sam on their 10pm to 2am shift but not long into it we hit a squall which came in from our right hand side. Rain, 27 knotts of wind, it all happens quite suddenly but the guys dealt with it brilliantly. Another sign we are all now ready for the Atlantic.

Last night there was a slight sense of sadness about the fact that our journey is nearing it's completion. We all commented that we feel like we have been going for a long time - almost that this new way of living is now just our life and we feel like we are in a routine which is nice.

That has given way today a sense of anticipatory excitement. We are now nearing Gran Canaria. Over night you could see a bit of a glow from the lights of Lanzorote. As I sat on my watch last night I smiled at the thought of a crap Mills and Boon novel with the same name 'Lights of Lanzarote' and I've kept myself amused today trying to think of titles to the other books that may appear in this series!

In other news Will saw a whale in the distance which is exciting particularly as it wasn't an Orca.

We have the sail up and are hoping to sail all the way down the east coast of the island to arrive at Pasito Blanco sometime around midnight or 1am. We have a bottle of LP champagne on the fridge to celebrate.
