Sunday saw winds strengthening from the SE F3-5 and latterly the wind veered to the S-SW meaning that we had to sail W-SW for a time. The winds were quite strong and constant until the early hours of Monday morning where we had to start the engine and motor due south. The sea was lumpy and uncomfortable at times. The cabins became very warm and sultry as we had to close the hatches due to the spray.

Current position is ~80 miles north of the western most Cape Verdean island. Dependant on this morning’s forecast and GRIB files, we will decide whether to land on Sao Vincento to refuel.

As it was Uncle Joe’s 80th birthday yesterday, we had a surprise party for Joe after evening dinner. Joe had no idea what trouble his family and friends went to, to ensure that this important milestone was marked whilst at sea. Joe was most appreciative and would like to thank everyone very much for their kind wishes and presents. The crew of course presented Joe with a few ‘special’ presents which will be put to good use once he reaches land!

Sunday night saw the first flying fish landing on the deck. It was pitch black and when we heard a few thuds against the cockpit combing. Using our head torches we could see three beautiful but battered (no pun intended!) fish washing up and down the toe rail. We collected them in a bucket to have a closer inspection. Their iridescent colours are indescribable.

We have just about exhausted our supply of fresh meet and we will now be supplementing our ‘rations’ with some fresh fish – assuming of course that Dermot can catch some!

The crew are all well and enjoying the various emails that make their way through the Mailasail email system.

Kind regards,

Skipper Ivan and crew.
