Trapani – 25th june to 27th June – N38 00.865 E12 30.059

Trapani is a very interesting town, like Carlo forte not pretty at first glance but beneath the rather shabby surface some magnificent baroque facades and elegant shops. As a base for exploring it is quite good too, there are lots of ferries to the Egadi islands and a fantastic funicular ride up 750m to the ancient mediaeval town of Eriche with fantastic views across the peninsular of Trapani. We all seven of us went up in brilliant sunshine, after a very long trek through the town to find the cable car, but whilst we were there the clouds descended and swirled around our head, it was quite an eerie feeling. It was very spooky the mists rolling through the cobbled streets and around the cathedral tower – the town is a bit like Mont St Michel – and it is hard to imagine how they managed to build and live in such a remote place.
