St. Helena Thursday 26th – 29th April 2007

What a pleasant surprise after 12 days at sea. The town (James Town) looks like a quaint English village minus the cold weather, but rather sub tropical The island is bigger than most people think and therefore we hired a car to explore the island. We met the town legend Ann of Ann’s Place. She’s a warm, friendly 67year old lady who loves her beer and makes you feel welcome straight away. We went out for dinner with her and a few other yacht crew's on Friday night to Orange Tree Restaurant. Afterwards we had to check some of the local hangouts namely the White Horse Tavern and the Consulate - this were we had our arrival party and a boogie. All in all we had a very good night on the town that ended with a swim of Jolly Roger at some early hour in the morning. The water around the island is crystal clear and you can see your anchor at the bottom of 18M + it's warm 25 degrees. On the cultural side of things we went to visit the 2 houses that Napoleon was imprisoned in, as well as his gravesite + a visit to Sandy Bay, Plantation House and the Castle. Jeff, Pete and Jackson walked up the famous Jacobs Ladder (699 very steep steps).St. Helena is definitely worth a visit, and the people (called "Saints") are extremely friendly, helpful and loads of fun. We recommend this visit and hope that we get the opportunity to visit the island again.  Right now we are sailing out and seeing the island disappear in to the background on a beautiful sunny morning !!!!
