Hopefully, tomorrow we'll have made it
into Maroua where we can get a proper internet link and send some photos.
Attached are shots of our new home (external shot, view from the front door and
one of the living area), an overview of the hospital from a hill above it, a
shot of part of the hospital courtyard with one of the resident vultures and one
Anne took of a small girl with a doll on her back, just as the local women carry
their infants, but note the skin colour of the doll! Anne has now visited all
four schools she'll be working with, plus the local secondary school. She
travelled by delapidated moto - rented by Godam Albert from his brother. Some of
the classes are huge - over 130 in one, and more than 100 is common. They're
short of both classrooms and teachers. In one school, one of the teachers was
carrying a stick which looked suspisciously like something used to beat the
children, but that's unconfirmed. The secondary school is fairly new and Anne
had a really good meeting with the head teacher, who spent some time at
Moray House teacher training college in Edinburgh! Although it's not on the list
of schools she'll be working with, we think the head teacher is interested in
having contact. I'm still feeling very inadequate as far as the workk in the
hospital is concerned. I'm keen to get "stuck in", but still have a lot to
learn. I reckon it will be several weeks yet until I'm able to make any kind of
effective contribution.
