For the second day Sam K gets a MIB (Mention in Blog). We started
today with some more fun and games as Ceilidh (The Caribbean Girl) made another
attempt to get us to head back to Bermuda!
Day light and the 0600 watch change revealed that we had a split in the
main sail just above the 3rd reef which had been in all night in 20 – 25 knots
of wind. It looked like the split was about 10” long. After a quick
bite to eat for the crew we got the main down and the full extent of the split
came in to view. It had gone in two places both on the edge of the repair
done in Grenada just before we collected Ceilidh. One split was 10” the
second about 27”.
Once the sail was off on to the coach roof Sam K set to work using some of
his UKSA training and produced one of the best repairs to a sail on the hoof
that I have seen. It took him four and a half hours and early afternoon we
had the main back up. Well done Sam, great effort.
We had still been doing 4 knots SOG with just the head sail but we are know
back at 7+ Knots with 1 reef in the main and the full jib. The wind is
slowly dropping of and we are just considering the option of going to full
main. However with night fast approaching we will probably stay as we are
unless the wind really dies off.
Roy has his sea legs, he managed a Ham and Cheese roll at lunch that stayed
down and a couple of snacks and drinks this afternoon. He is going to try
some sausage and chips shortly!
Despite the anchor and sail the first 24 hours after leaving Bermuda had
seen us put 155 NM between us and our start point.
Having just plotted our position now we will see what the 24 hours till the
next blog sees us cover. |
