Carelbi is an Oyster
53/55, seen here basking in the lovely Pacific waters of the Île des Pins

The
following photos take you on a walk around Carelbi, below
decks…
Carelbi
has a spacious saloon with a beautiful inlaid table which unfolds to
double the space seen on the right. There are 7 good-sized lockers for
food and tools under the blue Alcantara wipable upholstery. The
desalinator water maker is behind the seats by the porthole. Six can be
seated around the table with comfort, and many a good meal has been
enjoyed there with friends. 
The navigation desk is
to the left of the small sofa. The GPS, SSB radio and AIS feed into a
laptop. There is also a radar, VHF, Navtex, Kenwood CD & tape player,
Inmarsat, Iridium, as well as wind & sailing monitors. The electric
control panels for the boat, the Mastervolt inverter and Onan generator
are above the back of the seat with more storage space underneath it.
Behind the seat is a 10-CD stacker for the CD/tape
player.
The engine and
generator are opposite the fridge and freezer. There is a microwave which
can be used in calm conditions. You can ‘wodge’ yourself very securely and
safely in between the cooker and the sink when cooking in heavy weather
conditions, bracing yourself easily on the step on the other side of the
passageway.
Walk through the
galley to the spacious owners’ cabin, through the door just visible on the
right of this photo …
…the comfortable
double berth, with lee-cloths for each mattress, (no scrambling over your
partner to go to the loo at night!) and a small sofa with storage space
behind and below, bookshelves…
The basin, Jabsco
toilet, various cupboards, and, just visible on the far right, in the
shower room, is something no woman should have to circumnavigate, or sail
without… a perfectly ordinary household washing machine, which has given
sterling service all around the world.
On the right, opposite
the head/shower room is the double bunk cabin where, on the left of the
photo, you can see the ‘foot’ end of the two bunks as you look through the
door. There is storage space under the bottom bunk and several
side-pockets for each one .
The double-berth
forepeak cabin has a small sofa on the left as you enter and several good storage
areas on the sides of the berths themselves.
Entertaining in the
cockpit is easy as there is plenty of space for a lot of people! Carelbi
has a removable table which clips on to the helm and sits four comfortably
for meals, plus an extra small table which fits over the compass on the
helm for up to three more.
Carelbi is now back in
the Mediterranean after her epic ten year circumnavigation and is enjoying
cruising gently around the Greek islands, the perfect place to start your
own trip. Here she is, storming into Fiskado on the lovely little island
of Cephalonia, with a flat sea, 8 knots of breeze on a close
fetch.
If you come from south
of the Equator, and want a beautiful boat to take home, you cannot find a
better place to start - sailing back through the Mediterranean, Caribbean
and Pacific islands without having to worry about inhospitable places like Somalia and the Red
Sea.

Galapagos to the Marquisas in the Pacific…
… and in Suwarrow, a
tiny atoll in the middle of
the Pacific…
Opposite the big table
is a small sofa which opens up at the forward end to become a bunk for the
captain on long passages, where he can wake up and see the sails through
the saloon windows. Again, there are good sized lockers below and behind
the seating. The small table holds up the unfolded large table when needed
and is height-adjustable; the
original owner used to hold his board meetings on Carelbi, then pack up
the table and go sailing! DVD and tape players can be connected to a small TV
above the sofa.
Carelbi’s galley has a
new Force-10 cooker with 3 burners, grill and a good oven, and plenty of
kitchen space for storing every day cooking needs. To the right of the
cooker there is a fridge and excellent freezer under the work-top space.
The freezer held 45 packages of meat for five people when we left New
Zealand for a long passage back to the Tuamotos in the Pacific; we knew we
would not be able to buy much in the islands until we reached
Tahiti.
Once inside the aft
cabin, there is a large hanging cupboard behind the mirror on the far
right of the photo, with drawers underneath the left-hand mirror, facing
…
… more cupboards and
drawer storage space, with the door leading into the en-suite head and
shower unit.
Back in the saloon,
walk forward past the mast, and on your right there is a cabin with
double-decker berths. On the left, the head and shower unit for guests or
crew, and straight ahead, a further double berth
cabin…
… the guest toilet and
shower. It was difficult to
photograph but you can see the shower and basin reflected in the mirror
above the Jabsco toilet. There is plenty of small cupboard space for
toiletries and cleaning items.
Again, this was a
difficult cabin to photograph and I took this photo scrunched up at the
‘head’ end of the bottom bunk!
I have used the mirror on the capacious hanging cupboard to the
left of the door to show the bookcase on the opposite wall of the cabin,
while the full-length mirror next to the door reflects the drawer storage
space under the cupboard and the upper bunk. Under the bookcase there is
an identical set of drawers to those
under the hanging cupboard.
There is a good
hanging cupboard with ample drawer space underneath and more underneath
the bed. The deck wash pump is underneath the mattresses, as well as the
holding tank and plenty more storage space.
The aft deck is big
enough to haul up and deal with the largest fish you can catch… this is
probably a 1.2 metre mahi-mahi, but we did catch one of 1.52 metres in
Fijian waters. The deep freeze will accommodate what you can’t eat
immediately.

Carelbi is well
equipped for blue water sailing. Her average daily distance run was 173
nautical miles for the Atlantic and Pacific crossings. Boom, mast and
poles were professionally repainted in New Zealand, and are in
excellent condition. Every fitting, cleat and winch etc was removed and
rebedded.
