Day 5: Glenarm to Carlingford Lough. 04:15 wake up for a 5am start for the long leg (78NM) to Carlingford Lough. We used the first of the daylight to exit the small marina and watched the sunrise over the mull of Galloway.
It was however raining, a very unwelcome addition to the otherwise perfect weather. So we snuggled under the spray hood as we motored past Belfast. The wind built nicely so we hoisted and unrolled the code zero for a while. We saw guillemots and seals today and the odd dolphin.

It seemed like the tide was with us all day , an expected back eddy for the first 2 hours then 6 hrs of favourable tide and again mostly back eddy at the end. It’s important to enter Carlingford Loughs narrow entrance at slack water and due to all the favourable tides we were an hour and a half early. How bad can the last 90mins of ebbing tide be I thought …well answer is 4kts bad ! Luckily Exehibitionist has a chunky engine and once the pump is primed ( yes it didn’t again) she is perfectly capable of punching a lot of tide. The lough is fabulous, a real gem , the next obstacle was the marina had a shallow approach so we anchored off for dinner before creeping in. Man I’m glad I was creeping across the shallows because this marina officially has the smallest entrance ever and virtually no room to manoeuvre. Anyway no boats were harmed and nothing hit as I wiggled skilfully into our allotted pontoon. The marina is very quirky it has an old ship as part of the exit steps to shore with a sign they can’t be used 1h either side of LW.
