217 Miles To Go and Pugwash Goes
Barefoot
I can't believe it, only 217 miles to go. It
doesn't seem like nearly three weeks ago we set off across the big blue ocean
from Gran Canaria but here we are, just over a days sail
away from St Lucia. It's all very exciting. We had a quick crew brief this
morning about the plans for arrival, the dangers of the river entrance into
Rodney Bay and the possibility that, if we arrive Friday night after dark, we
may have to cross the finishing line, drop anchor in the bay and stay there
until first light. How frustrating to be so close to hot fresh water, rum punch
and salad and not be able to reach it. Still, better to be safe than sorry. We
dont want to cross the whole Atlantic only to damage the boat or ourselves
entering the harbour. There'll be even bigger
excitement tomorrow when we can see land again for the first time in three
weeks. An added to that it's Georges birthday tomorrow. Party
anyone?
Last night was very bouncy, the seas were a bit
confused with waves coming from all directions. It made for a very sleepless and
bumpy ride. A few of us also got a soaking. I left my front hatch open to get
some air as it very hot and got a soaking when a freak wave came in to
greet me at about 2am. Becci and Mark nearly got washed away on the early
morning watch too as two huge waves swept through the cockpit. Thankfully they
were clipped on with harnesses so no-one went overboard.
Pugwash has also been getting over excited today.
As we failed dismally at catching any fish yesterday and had to resort to the
tinned chilli, he thought he'd show off by trying his hand at catching the
elusive tuna. In the end he slipped of down the line and ended up doing some
barefoot waterskiing instead. He's turned into quite the adrenaline junkie has
our Captain Pugwash! We'l have to see if we can find any diving or base jumping
for him to do in St Lucia.
Until tomorrow (when we'll all be very over
excited!)
