Leg 7b - Sagres to Lagos
We had been thinking about a bracing early morning swim when we went to bed after a beer or two but an overcast morning quickly put paid to that! Lagos was not far away, so with a good wind on the beam we just weighed the anchor, rolled out the jib and tucked close inshore to stay away from the orca and enjoy the view of the coast. The fixed rows of fishing nets didn’t seem to be a problem as we could navigate inside them. Even under jib alone we were doing up to 6kts. Not fast enough for Jane, who was clearly a bit twitchy and wanted to hoist the mainsail. Deegs and Giles on the other hand saw an opportunity to try fishing again, sadly without success, again. When we approached the headland before Lagos we discovered the caves and coves of Ponta da Piedade. Stunning but crowded with tourists. We’ll try to get in there early one morning in September, before the trip boats descend on it. We sailed right up to the beach just east of the entrance to Lagos harbour and dropped the hook into the sand for the night. There was a strong offshore breeze again until after dark but no swell to upset a good night’s sleep. The following morning marked the end of Part 1 of our journey. We might have been the first to leave Oeiras and the last to berth in Lagos but we had enjoyed the last leg and the whole journey so far very much. Great weather, great company and a great learning experience in preparation for the legs ahead of us. Giles |
