The wind gods were on holiday for leg 4. We all motored across the start line and just kept going for a few hours. Andrew & Murielle on Galatea of Aune were surprised to find overdrive on their prop and watched the rest of the fleet fall behind rather rapidly. Sayonara went offshore in search of wind, which they found, and had a lovely, if slow sail to Nazaré. With Libby and Deegs waiting for us in Nazaré, we opted to keep motoring and just slowed a little to try out the new fishing gear.

The shoreline was one very long stretch of sand until we reached the headland Pontal da Nazaré, a Mecca for surfers as it lays claim to waves up to 30m high! Fortunately, today was not a big surf day.

Offshore, we saw two water spouts under a thick layer of cloud. We couldn’t find anything on the radar screen but it was hard to guess how far away they were.

5½ hrs and no fish later, we arrived at Nazaré.
