On Wednesday, Day 3, the sailing was excellent making very good progress and all was going well.

On Thursday, Day 4, that all changed. The wind changed to a south west direction. I had two choices. I could head south east or north west in gale force winds at times.

The disadvantage with south east was that I was heading deep into the Bay of Biscay and would have to cross busy shipping lanes. 10 ships coming from the north were immediately visible on radar. There would be more to follow from north and south. I was concerned too that if I headed for southern Biscay, that I might have difficulty getting out when the weather changes to a predicted north west.

I have decided to head north west. This is perpendicular to the intended route. I have got minimal sail up going dead slow. The winds have been gale force at times and the seas are uncomfortable at around 2.5m high. Going this way means stronger winds and bigger seas. However, if I can wait for the weather to pass then I have a good chance of passing Cape Finnisterre in north west Spain without too much trouble and avoid shipping. I will go this way for a total of about 18 hours.

So I have put the storm board in the companionway (doorway) and have shut up shop. I have been able to catch up on some sleep even though the boat is rocking. Very little shipping has been encountered on radar.

The forecasts predict that this will pass in a few hours and I will then be on my way. Worse winds are hitting the western UK, so it looks as though I missed the worst of it.

That's good day to you from Ingrid.
