Fort Augustus
57:8.770N 4:40.631W Monday 19th July Left Laggan just after 8am and passed through the swing bridge and into Loch Oich. No wind again so motoring. Then through the Aberchalder swing bridge and Cullochy and Kytra locks with no delays. These locks are now going back down and much more pleasant to negotiate. We arrived at Fort Augustus top lock just as it opened to let 3 boats out and went down the flight of 5 locks with no problems; Helen on the shore handling both lines as we advanced to the next chamber under power, and then giving me (Chris) the stern line once in position. She was praised for her calmness by the lock keeper at the bottom. We then moored up on the alongside pontoon just after the locks and in site of the entrance to Loch Ness. Fort Augustus has a few gift shops, bars and restaurants and lots of tourists. We then went and did a bit of shopping, watched the boats coming and going through the locks and walked along the towpath to the edge of Loch Ness where Helen had a paddle. Weather today has been warm and mainly sunny. Had take away pizza for dinner. This is the view of the Fort Augustus locks from the top with Loch Ness in the background |
