Thank goodness we are on our way
north at last! Destination is Nevis and we will have to make a landfall
in the night, no problem with the two 18 year olds on board, they just keep
playing “why worry” as Bob Marley keeps telling us on the CD
player. On the passage it was a down wind sleigh ride, great sailing till
the dinghy we were towing decided to part company with Oboe and go it’s
own way upside down. James saw this happen and was told to keep pointing
at it as it disappeared behind us at a frightening speed, frantic sail handling
and great helming by the skipper (Nigel in other words) brought the dinghy
alongside, was recovered and we were able to resume our course. A fine
demonstration of the RYA Man Overboard Recovery procedure! Fishing was the next disaster as
we were surfing at 7-8 knots a Dorado grabbed the lure, jumped out of the waves
and snapped the 40 lb line like cotton, no fresh fish tonight!
Night fell quickly as it tends
to do in the Caribbean and we donned life jackets, tethered ourselves to the
boat and sailed on into the night. For the two youngsters this was a
first time experience and both were overwhelmed by the starry, starry night.
Lights of Nevis grew in strength as we approached the SW coast of the island
and worked our way carefully into the shallows to pick up a buoy and secure for
the night. A late supper was scoffed and we
were lulled to sleep by the swell in the bay! Morning came far too quickly but
the anticipation of an island tour with a local taxi driver spurred us into
action and we bounced across the waves in the dinghy wet through to the dinghy
dock and spend a wonderful day playing tourist, eating drinking and visiting
spots of historic interest, including the spot where Captain Nelson (of Admiral
Nelson fame!) married his sweetheart Miss Nisbett, the daughter of a local
plantation owner. A great couple of days! Mike |
