Necessity is now in Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. Beautiful little town, magnificent anchorage and dismal weather.
We checked into the US yesterday after a sudden decision to go across from Victoria. The reason was simply that the marina cost more than $70 a day with no facilities and no alternatives (Fishermens Warf was closed). That was a little steep. We did manage to see some of the city including a bug zoo. It gave us a unique opportunity to hug a huge cockroach and a tarantella as well as numerous others from rainforests all over - recommended. The town itself was bug free and beautiful with a British flavour.
Checking in to the US in Friday Harbor was straightforward, cheap and without hassle. The San Juan islands are a very nice cruising ground, but the area reminds us a little too much of the Oslo fjord. Exiting for most, but maybe not for us. We do keep looking for more Orcas though. We wouldn't expect see them in the Oslo fjord.
In a few days we will start heading out to see to go south to Oregon.
