We are presently two  hours away from our destination Lewisport,
Newfoundland.  It has taken us three weeks to sail down the coast from Pond
Inlet on Baffin Island. We have taken shelter down the coast of Baffin Island
and Labrador from the weather. The last three days have been challenging with
winds blowing out of the south east which was the direction we were headed for!
We had a very bumpy day yesterday sailing down the coast from St Anthony,
Newfoundland. We took shelter in a small isolated cove on the north end of Bell
Island to wait for the forecasted wind to change to south west. It looked like
the perfect backdrop for a pirate movie with huge gullies and caves along the
shore. We dropped anchor, feasted on Turbot, garlic potatoes and carrots and
dove into Dais emergency rations for dessert! They raided mine the night before
when we anchored off on the tip of the north point. Its time to leave one eye
open when you slip in your bunk and have some shut eye around here with both
Rice brothers on board!
Last night when the shades of darkness fell upon us, unable to see the
shore it began to rain and seemed as we were dragging our anchor very slowly. We
picked up anchor and steered for Lewisport. It was a bumpy ride all right, but
the wind did change to south east at around 02.00 hours this morning. Around
06.00 hours when I was just making our daily ration of porridge is when the seas
started picking up and things started to go helter skelter around here. Its
12.40 hours Newfoundland  time at the moment and we just came to the lee of
Bacalhao Island in Notre Dame Bay.
The three of us are very happy to be almost at the end of this voyage. It
has been mentioned that we might go ashore this evening and wander around town
for a meal ashore and a wee drink to go with it!
There has to be disappointment that we were never able to get through this
year  but life is more than reaching the destination. When you get on the
bus its the rich experiences, the amazing travellers and characters you meet
along the way that is the most rewarding and not just getting there.
We have all learnt a great deal, filled up our treasure boxes of life
experiences and are all looking forward to seeing you all again.
Pnawn da, good afternoon to you all! Hywel.
